Here’s my story:

Pages burning

within the flame,

The book of lies

is all to blame.

It was a journal, filled with lies. Lies I told everyone else. Lies I told myself. I had been a liar my whole life.

Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted a perfect life. I always believed that you have to be popular to be happy.  I worked so hard, trying to be in the “popular” group, trying to fit in. I was happy. Or I thought I was.

On my thirteenth birthday, my younger sister Bella (9 years old). She gifted me a journal. She had personalized the cover herself. It was a pale pink and in beautiful calligraphy, my name was written in gold paint. Underneath the paint was a small golden heart. It was handmade. My friends and I didn’t like hand-crafted things. My friends were all rich and they believed that you can never have anything that’s not store-bought. My sister was gazing up at me hopefully, waiting for a response. I just stiffly said “Thank you.” My sister should know better than to give me something she made herself. She looked disappointed. Riley, my best friend noticed this. And with a snarky smile she said, “If you want your sister to appreciate your gift, next time put in some more effort and buy something. Anything is better than something made by a 9year old.” Bella sadly walked away with angry tears in her eyes.

The next day, Bella came into my roman threw a store-bought notebook on my bed. “To make up for yesterday. I’m sorry me gift wasn’t good enough. I hope you’re happy Sophie”, and she stomped out. That’s the day I started writing in my journal. I felt like doing something. So, zI just sat on my bed and wrote. I used the store bought notebook, because I knew it would ruin my reputation if I used the one Bella made.

I started writing in my journal everyday. I told Riley about it, but she just laughed and said, “You’re kidding. Right? Journaling is for dorks. If you really are journaling, then it could ruin your reputation. We have to focus on our studies and sports. That’s why you didn’t make the volleyball team. You were to busy writing in that journal, You need to stop writing in that journal.”

I felt ashamed of myself. But something inside me made me want to keep writing. This time I did’t tell anyone. I kept it a secret.

A few days later, it was one of my friend’s birthday. It was a sleepover party. Riley had come over, so we could carpool together. While we were doing our makeup, Bella barged in. She always interrupted a good time. “Sophie, I need to talk to you”, she said nervously.

“Sophie does not have time to spend with a silly third grader”‘ Riley retorted.

“I didn’t ask you, Riley.”

“Don’t talk to me that way. I’m your sister’s best friend.”

“And I’m your best friend’s sister. I just want a few minutes withe Sophie.”

I was exasperated. “Okay. Five minutes only. Begin.”

” We need to talk privately.”

I sighed and told Riley ” I’ll be right back.”

We went in Bella’s room.

“Sit”, she said.

“I can’t sit. I need to pack my clothes for the sleepover party.”

“You’re not going to the party.”

“What!?”

“Mom and dad said so.”

“What about Riley?”

“Mom will drop her off to the party.”

“What the heck? When did you plan this.”

” Yesterday. At the family meeting. I told mom and dad that I needed to have a talk with you. And they agreed.”

“You had a family meeting without me?”

“I asked you. You said you had better things to do. Maybe if you had come, you could have gone to that sleepover”

“What do you want?”

“To ask you some questions.”

” Go ahead.”

“What’s your greatest fear?”

“What kind of a question is that?”

“Just answer me.”

“Not being popular.”

“No.”

“What?”

“You’re lying.”

“Why would I lie about what I’m afraid of?”

“Let’s try something else. What’s your favorite hobby?”

“Doing things with my friends.”

“Also a lie.”

“How do you know I’m lying?”

“Because you always do. Why do you hate me?”

This took me aback, but I stiffly answered.

“Because you’re weird and annoying.”

With tears in her eyes she shouted:

” Stop lying to me.”

“Ask no questions, get no lies.”

“I read your journal.”

“You did what?”

“Why do you care. Nothing in your journal is true, you’re lying to yourself. You can’t admit how you really feel. You’re not writing down your true feelings. You’re living a lie. Your journal makes it look like you have a perfect life. You are it seem like everything is fine.”

“Everything is fine.”

“No! It’s not fine. Your journal is a lie. As much as you try to push away reality, it’s still reality. You have to learn that life is not perfect. Nor are you. Popularity doesn’t mean a thing. What’s the point of life if you can’t enjoy it. You’re not happy. I can tell. Are you? Are you happy?”

I stayed silent.

“That’s what I thought. As much as you want to deny it, you don’t like who you pretend to be and you don’t like the fact that you can’t be yourself. How far can you go to be popular? You sacrificed yourself.  You think that nobody will like you for who you are. You’re wrong. You can have so much more if if you could accept who you are and be happy. Please come back. I miss you and I really, really need you. Please.”

Bella was crying by now. I looked at her and wrapped her up in a hug. I didn’t care that my favorite dress was getting ruined by her tears and mine. I didn’t care that if my so-called friends saw me write now, they would tease me. I didn’t care. And just like that, a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulder. I looked at my sister and wiped her tears. “We should burn that book”, I said.

Here we were. In our backyard, ready to burn the book. Our parents had given us permission  to do it as long as we didn’t burn the house down.

“Go ahead”, said Bella.

I nodded and threw my journal in and watched it burn.

“Wait!” Bella shouted as she ran to the porch where we had kept a bucket of water (just in case). She came back with the water and splashed it all over the fire and me.

“What was that for?” I shouted.

She picked up the burnt up journal and said, “Incase you need a reminder.”
